Regional awards: top achievers in East Africa power sector

On Thursday evening, the regional awards ceremony honouring top achievers in seven categories in the East African power sector took place at the inaugural East African Power Industry Awards in Nairobi.

Local power utility Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) scored a double win walking away with two awards in the renewables and generation categories.

The utility took top honours as the Clean Power regional awards' winner for its Olkaria Expansion Project. In a second win, it was awarded the Excellence in Power Generation for consistently delivering development at the Olkaria geothermal plant, which is seen as a step toward significantly lowering the cost of electricity in Kenya.

According to the regional awards' judging panel, the Olkaria Expansion Project is the “final piece in one of the largest geothermal power projects in the world making Kenya a world leader in geothermal energy.

"It will also significantly contribute to bringing down the cost of power in Kenya by directly offsetting thermal based generation," said the judges.

Lifetime achievement among the best

The regional awards' Lifetime Achievement for East Africa went to Dr Albert Butare, former Energy Minister of Rwanda.

Dr Butare’s resume includes more than 20 years of energy, water, and communication experience in Africa.

He has experience in high-level public sector policy and project development and implementation, engineering, social and economic development.

On winning the award, Butare said: “When you do what you do in Rwanda and in the region, you do it for what it is - advising the government and potential investors – you do it as the natural course of our day-to-day responsibilities.

“Looking at the other finalists, they are all fantastic and for me to be awarded as the winner I am really humbled and encouraged to continue what I am doing moving the energy sector forward.”

Regional awards' for women in power

The regional awards for Outstanding Woman in Power went to H.E. Dr Elham Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union, Ethiopia who was also a finalist in the Lifetime Achievement category.

Dr Ibrahim has over 30 years of service in the energy sector including academic research, energy strategies and policies, international cooperation, technical agreements and protocols, and energy planning studies.

In April 2008, she was elected and appointed for the post of Commissioner of Infrastructure and Energy, in the African Union Commission and was re-elected in 2012 for the same post.

Dr Ibrahim said: “It [this award] has a lot of meaning for me to know that what you are doing is recognised and appreciated by your colleagues – especially [for us] in the African Union Commission.

“Sometimes it is not recognised that the AUC is working also for development. It is assumed that it is only for businesses, security and political organisations.

“I’m really happy that what we are doing is known, recognised and appreciated – also as a woman [in this sector].”

Umeme takes T&D regional award

On awarding the Ugandan power utility Umeme the regional award for T&D, the judges said: “Excellent details on past performance and how they intend to grow”.

Umeme plans to invest as much as $100 million in upgrading its network this year. Planned funding this year is part of the $440 million the company is spending between 2013 and 2018 overhauling old equipment, buying new technology and adding distribution points.

CSR initiative awarded to Airtel

The CSR Initiative award went to Airtel, Kenya for its 2014 I-Afrika biogas plant.

This small-scale biogas plant consists of a digester, in which bacteria convert animal dung into methane gas through the process of anaerobic digestion.

On awarding this project, the judges said: “The project has had a positive impact on the school it has targeted. It definitely is for the social good, is eco-friendly and required a charitable contribution from the company”.

Power transaction of the year

Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, Jumeme Rural Power Supply Ltd, Tanzania took the final award for Power Transaction of the Year.

The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) approved at the end of 2014 a $420,000 preparation grant to Jumeme. This grant is to support the development of a portfolio of independent solar-hybrid mini-grids in rural growth centres in Tanzania.

Tribert Rujugiro: le fisc rwandais veut «salir mon nom»

La Rwanda Revenue Authority, la direction des impôts au Rwanda, a publié une liste des mauvais payeurs, particuliers ou entreprises, Rwandais ou étrangers, qui doivent de l’argent à l’Etat rwandais. Nommément cité, Tribert Rujugiro s’insurge contre ce qu’il considère comme une « insulte ».

Dans cette liste figurent quelques noms connus, comme Leah Karegeya, la femme de l’opposant Patrick Karegeya, parti en exil en 2007 et décédé en décembre 2013. On trouve également Tribert Rujugiro, l’ancien financier du FPR tombé en disgrâce, qui vit lui aussi en exil. Ces taxes, il les devrait en tant propriétaire de l’UTC, un centre commercial que les autorités rwandaises ont qualifié de propriété abandonnée, et se sont appropriés depuis 2013.

Une décision que l’homme d’affaires rwandais a toujours dénoncée comme illégale. Aujourd’hui, Tribert Rujugiro ne comprend pas comment on peut, en plus, lui demander de payer des impôts. « Ce n’est pas compréhensible. UTC est un Mall [centre commercial, ndlr] qui a des recettes de 100 millions de francs rwandais par mois. Comment avec ces 100 millions n’ont-ils pas pu payer les taxes du gouvernement, et maintenant, ils rejettent tout sur moi. »

Strong earthquake hits Rwanda

KIGALI, Rwanda, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake struck Rwanda and shook most of the capital Kigali Friday morning.

The magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Rwanda at 3:25 am local time (0125 GMT), the United States Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 35 km north of Cyangugu city in western Rwanda, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 km.

This is the second strong earthquake ever felt in Rwanda within a period of seven years.

An earthquake damaged up to 45 schools and health centers in western Rwanda's districts of Nyamasheke and Rusizi in February 2008. 27,000 children were evacuated from schools, while 37 people died and 646 others were injured.

According to experts, earthquakes are common in the western Great Rift Valley due to the presence of a seismically active fault line which straddles western Uganda, eastern the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Challenges are a vehicle to prosperity - Sandra Teta

At only 23, Sandra Teta is a businesswoman running her own events management company. She recently organised the Rwanda International Fashion Week, an event that cemented her position on the social events calendar. She talked to Donah Mbabazi about the secret behind her success and tips for young girls, among other issues.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Sandra Teta and I am 23 years old. I was born in Kampala, Uganda and I am the first born in a family of five children. I went Kigali Parents School for my primary school education and sat my O’ levels at Fawe Girl’s School. I did my A’ level education at Lycee de Kigali and right now, I am pursuing a degree in Law at University of Kigali. I am currently single.

In brief, tell us what you do

I am a business woman. I own and run a company called Luminant Entertainment Limited, which is mainly into the event management business. I started it earlier this year in February.

Why events management?

Well, I think I have a lot of ideas to bring to the business table and I ventured into events management because I thought it as one of the business fields that has many avenues that haven’t yet been fully exploited.

How do you balance work with studies?

It’s really challenging. It’s not easy at all but I guess it all comes down to setting targets for yourself and making sure that you work hard at achieving them.

What are some of the challenges you meet on a day to day basis?

The challenges are many but the main challenge is ensuring that something I plan goes exactly as I planned because if it doesn’t, then I get to feel like I have failed. I end up having to put in more than 100 percent to see that whatever I do comes out exactly the way I want it.

You are the businesswoman behind the recent successfully concluded International Fashion Week, how did you pull it off?

I am so grateful and blessed that it actually turned out to be successful. I only managed because I had an exceptionally good team that put in a lot of work and other sacrifices to help me organize the whole event.

What are some of your achievements so far?

So far, what I can confidently call my achievement is founding the Rwanda National Entrepreneurs Debate championship, being the founder of Red Avenue which is a strictly all red theme party plus DJ Mix and Entertainers, and now, the Rwanda International Fashion World.

That is a lot of success for a very young person

I feel blessed and it honestly feels good, but it’s also challenging because you have to work harder to maintain the standard. Still, the challenges are the vehicle that keeps me inspired.

Where do you see yourself in two to three years?

I plan to expand my business across borders. I plan to also start a programme to mentor young girls to be confident and believe in themselves because it is in them that this country is seeing the long term fruits of change.

Who inspires you and why?

My dad inspires me a lot. His work ethic inspires me. He is very hardworking.

What is your secret to success?

First of all, I believe in myself, secondly I never settle for less, I keep on yearning to achieve more and lastly, I am a perfectionist. I ensure that things are done the way I exactly want them to be done.

60 media workers killed in first half of this year for doing their job

A total of 60 media workers were killed in the first half of 2015, according to the biannual report by the International News Safety Institute (INSI).

Its report, Killing the Messenger, details the number of journalists killed for simply doing their job, how they died and where they worked.

For the first time since INSI began to compile its reports, a western democracy (France) was listed as the deadliest country in the world to be a journalist.

That follows the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January in which eight journalists (plus four others) were killed.

South Sudan and Yemen were the second bloodiest countries for journalists in the first half of 2015, with six members of the news media killed in each, while Iraq and Libya were close behind in joint fourth place with five journalists losing their lives.

INSI’s president, Richard Sambrook, said: “This year is shaping up to be worse than last year for journalists’ deaths.

“Again local journalists are under most threat – from investigating crime and corruption – and account for more than 90% of those killed”.

He pointed out that seven journalists have been decapitated by jihadist groups so ar this year. “The consequence of all this is that the public know less about the world than they should, and the killing of journalists is increasingly seen as a political act or means of censorship,” he said.

Syria, which has topped the list for the past three years, saw a decline in the number of media killed - down from 11 in 2014 to two during the first six months of 2015.

But that’s because the country has become a no-go zone for most reporters since the beheadings of Japanese and American freelancers.

A Libyan journalist gave an insight into the situation for the press in his country. He told INSI:

“I started receiving threats, which I ignored, because I did not expect my country to become a hostage to, and to be ruled by, armed militias.

I was away at a workshop in Paris when gangs, which is a correct description of these militias, broke into my house by force.

They threatened my 80-year-old mother, my wife and my five-year-old son with automatic weapons and took them to one of their camps, though they were released later that evening”.

His house was later burnt down and he was forced to flee to Tunisia.

The report found that more than half of the journalists who were killed had died during peacetime and their murderers enjoyed near total impunity. 

Sambrook said: “Impunity remains an overarching issue for the international community”.

Rwanda ranks among most efficient governments says report

Rwanda has been ranked the 7th most efficient government globally in the Global Competitive Report 2014-2015.

The latest report, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Monday put the small Central African nation ahead of Malaysia, Switzerland and Luxembourg, which are placed 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively.

The survey ranked the Qatar government as the most efficient, followed by Singapore in second place and Finland in third.

"Rwanda’s strong showing in seventh position was secured thanks in large part to the low level of waste in government spending," says WEF findings.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Anastase Shyaka, chief executive officer Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) said that Rwanda has put in much efforts towards promoting transparency and accountable governance system.

"We are not surprised by the report because the results speak what is on the ground in our country.

"In Rwanda there is meaningful participation and accountability, particularly when it comes to how public resources are allocated," he noted.

Shyaka stated that Rwandans have access to crucial information about how government operates, establishes priorities and makes decisions.

The annual survey evaluates the efficiency of 144 of the world’ s governments on measures including the wastefulness of government spending, burden of regulation and transparency of policymaking, to produce an overall global ranking.

The report ranks Rwanda top in Africa, followed by Mauritius (26th globally) and South Africa on third position (32 globally).

Rwanda has been on several occasions ranked among the most dynamic performers when it comes to social and economic development indicators across the globe.

The efficiency of government has a significant bearing on a country’s competitiveness and economic growth, says the report.

In East Africa, Kenya comes second after Rwanda as most efficient, but stands at 51st position at global level, Uganda is in third position (79th globally) followed by Tanzania (81st globally) and Burundi comes last in the countries making East African Community (EAC) and 121st at global level.
