KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Rioting erupted across Nigeria's largely Muslim north on Monday and the Red Cross said many people were killed as youths torched churches and homes in anger at President Goodluck Jonathan's election victory.
The vote count showed Jonathan, from the southern oil-producing Niger Delta, had beaten Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler from the north, in the first round.
Observers have called the poll the fairest in decades in Africa's most populous nation but Buhari's supporters accuse the ruling party of rigging and his Congress for Progressive Change Party rejected results announced so far.
Those results show how politically polarised the country is, with Buhari sweeping the north and Jonathan winning the largely Christian south.
The Nigerian Red Cross said churches, mosques and homes had been burned in rioting across the north.
"A lot of people have been killed but early reports are still coming in," Red Cross official Umar Mairiga told Reuters.
Authorities in the northern state of Kaduna imposed a 24-hour curfew after protesters set fire to the residence of Vice President Namadi Sambo in the town of Zaria and forced their way into the central prison, releasing inmates.
The body of a small boy shot in the chest by a stray bullet was brought to a police station, a witness said.

Nigeria's Jonathan yatangiye kwizera intsinzi n'ubwo igie kitaragera

ABUJA (Reuters) - President Goodluck Jonathan took what appeared to be an unassailable lead on Sunday as votes were tallied from around Nigeria, despite a strong showing by rival Muhammadu Buhari in his mainly-Muslim strongholds.

Buhari, a former military ruler from the arid, dustblown north, was hoping to at least force a second round against Jonathan, the first head of state from the swamps and creeks of the oil-producing Niger Delta.

But that looked unlikely with a Reuters tally of results from across Africa's most populous nation showing Jonathan on more than 20 million votes to 10 million for Buhari. Other candidates were far behind.

Observers called the election the fairest for decades in Nigeria, where rigged polls have been the norm. There were still suspicions of malpractice in some districts, though, and that could inflame tempers after the count.

Jonathan's officials said there would be no victory claim until results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission. They were clearly upbeat.

"This is no time for triumphalism. It is a time for deep reflection, for strengthening the bond of our union and for all of us to work together," Oronto Douglas, a senior advisor to Jonathan, told Reuters.

The president did particularly well in his predominantly Christian south, while Buhari swept many northern states in the country of 150 million people.

To avoid a run-off, the winner must get a simple majority and at least a quarter of the vote in 24 of the 36 states. Jonathan already had that margin in enough states.   Continued...

BBC radio presenter forced to endure 14-hour flight while having a heart attack after pilot 'refused to land'

Touch-and-go: Max Pearson had been reporting on the earthquake in Japan for a week before his journey homeA BBC radio presenter who suffered a heart attack while flying home from covering the Japanese tsunami may take legal action against the airline after it refused to divert the jet to the nearest hospital.

Max Pearson had to endure the 14-hour Singapore Airlines flight in cardiac arrest and now, according to colleagues, has been left with long-term heart damage as a result.

The award-winning BBC World Service journalist had been reporting on the earthquake for a week. He later flew from Tokyo to Singapore, then boarded a connecting flight bound for London which landed on March 18.

Soon after the plane took off from Singapore, Mr Pearson, 51, suffered a heart attack. It is claimed cabin crew refused requests to reroute the plane so he could receive urgent medical attention.

Mr Pearson, a married father of two, was rushed by ambulance to Harefield Hospital as soon as the jet touched down at Heathrow and underwent emergency surgery which saved his life.

He was kept in hospital to recover for almost a week and has been off work for the past month.

Speaking from his £750,000 home near East Grinstead, West Sussex, where he is resting, Mr Pearson said: ‘I don’t want to talk about it yet. It’s a very delicate situation.’

A BBC source said: ‘It is lucky he managed to survive. It looks as if he was attended to by one of the passengers, who was a doctor, during the flight.

‘He says he asked for them to redirect him to hospital but it didn’t happen. After that it was touch-and-go whether he was going to make the 14-hour flight, but amazingly he did.

‘Max is still very poorly and is considering taking legal action against Singapore Airlines.’

A spokesman for the company refused to comment.

Rwanda- Woman arrested for human trafficking

NYAGATARE- Police in Nyagatare District are holding a 25-year-old woman and a motor-cycle taxi operator in connection with human trafficking.

Charlotte Musanabera and Benon Rwabyoma were arrested on Monday while trying to illegally cross the border into Uganda to lure a 20-year-old girl into prostitution.

Police said that Musanabera, a resident of Kanombe in Kicukiro District in Kigali city, allegedly convinced a 20-year-old girl (name withheld) who is her neighbour that she would get her a job at one of the hotels in Nyagatare.

“She told her that she was taking her to one of the hotels in Nyagatare to work but instead diverted her,” a police official at Nyagatare police post told The Sunday Times on Friday.

When they reached Nyagatare town, Musanabera hired Benon Rwabyoma, a motor cycle taxi operator in the town who smuggled the young girl to Ntungamo District in neighbouring Uganda.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Musanabera said that she was taking the girl to a Rwandan man whom she identified as Nelson who would later take both of them to Gikagati in Ntungamo to work in a hotel.

“I took the girl from her home in Kanombe because someone had given me Nelson’s number saying that he was going to give us a job at a hotel near the Rwanda-Uganda border. Because I deceived the girl that we were going very near in Nyagatare town I did not want to tell her exactly where we were going,” she said.

Sandrine Mwamikazi, Musanabera’s neighbour, said that residents in the area, especially the suspect’s neighbours, have been accusing Musanabera of trafficking young girls.

“Residents have been accusing this woman of human trafficking and luring young girls into prostitution. She is accused of having kidnapped two other girls who are now nowhere to be seen.,” Mwamikaz said.

Musanabera’s alleged accomplice, Rwabyoma, confessed to crossing the border but said that he has no connection with human trafficking.

“I admit having violated the law by crossing the border illegally, but I had no connection with selling young girls to Uganda..I just received a phone call from Nelson asking me to take his visitors to Kazaza centre near Gikagati. As a motor cyclist looking for money, I took them,” he said.

Police spokesperson, Supt. Theos Badege, said that human trafficking is a serious crime punished by the law.

“These are some of the few serious crimes we experience…they are cross-border crimes and we give them much importance in collaboration with immigration departments.

It is a crime that is even given much attention in the regional cooperation,” he said.

The Police spokesman strongly warned parents who abandon their children to go and work in unknown places.

Rihanna's family secret is out - the pop star has three older siblings from her dad Ronald's past flings.

The Umbrella hitmaker, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, has two younger brothers from Ronald's 14-year marriage to her mum Monica.

But now Ronald has confirmed that Rihanna is both a younger sister and an auntie after going public with his three other children, each by different mothers.

Rihanna's eldest half-sister is 32-year-old Kandy, who first met the singer when she was just 15.

Kandy, who works as a pharmacy assistant in Rihanna's native Barbados, insists her daughters Brandy, 14, and 11-year-old Crystal, are very proud of their aunt.

She tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "My girls thought she was great fun and now, of course, they love the fact their auntie is one of the most famous singers in the world. They love her music and are always singing her songs at the top of their voices."

Ronald also reveals that Rihanna has a 30-year-old half-sister, Samantha, as well as a 27-year-old half-brother Jamie.

At the age of 15, Rihanna received her big break when one of her friends introduced her to music producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing in Barbados with his wife. Rogers, along with his partner, Carl Sturken, helped Rihanna record material in the U.S. which was sent to various recording companies. One copy of Rihanna's work was sent to Jay-Z, who eventually signed her to Def Jam Records. Rihanna cites Alicia Keys, Beyonce and her Caribbean background as major musical influences. Rihanna also stated in an interview that her friend and former Island Def Jam record label artist Fefe Dobson was someone that she admired and looked up to, having a fellow artist writing, singing, and performing the music she truly loves.

Music of the Sun

Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun, which she co-wrote, was released in August 2005. The first single released from the album was the track "Pon De Replay", which peaked at number two on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart due to considerable airplay. The second single, "If It's Lovin' That You Want", was less successful than its predecessor, peaking on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 36, and number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The album itself peaked within the top ten in Canada, and the U.S., and within the top forty in the UK. It has received platinum certifications in several countries, and received a Gold certification in the U.S. by the RIAA. To further promote the album, Rihanna toured as an opening act for American pop singer Gwen Stefani. The album sold over 500,000 units in the U.S. and over 2 million worldwide. The album features many dancehall songs that harken to her island upbringing. Because her second album, A Girl Like Me was released so soon after Music of the Sun, no more singles were released. However, a third single, "Let Me" was officially released in Japan, and peaked at number eight there.

A Girl Like Me

In 2006, Rihanna participated in several endorsement deals, including for Nike and J.C. Penney. She released her second album, A Girl Like Me, in April 2006, less than eight months after the release of her first album. The album debuted at number five in the U.S. and number four in the UK. The lead single, "SOS", was used in her endorsement deal with Nike. The song became Rihanna's first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also debuted at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart. "SOS" peaked at number one in Australia and number two in the UK. The second single, entitled "Unfaithful", was written by R&B singer Ne-Yo, and addresses the feelings of guilt that the protagonist of the song faces as she cheats on her boyfriend. The song became her third top ten hit in the U.S. and in the UK. The third single "We Ride" wasn't as successful as her previous releases, failing to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, however, it became her fifth UK top 20 single, where it peaked at number 17 on that chart and peaked number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. Rihanna's fourth single from the album "Break It Off" featuring Sean Paul, had already climbed to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 based solely on airplay. It was released as a digital download on February 19, 2007, which made the song jump from number fifty-two to number ten and then eventually peak at number nine.

In total Rihanna has had 11 different number-ones on the Billboard charts and has had major success on the Hot Dance Club Play chart with four number-ones ("Pon De Replay", "SOS", "Unfaithful" and "We Ride"). When Rihanna received an endorsement deal from Clinique, she recorded a song written by Ne-Yo entitled "Just Be Happy" as part of the deal to promote their Happy fragrance. The song can be heard on her Myspace page. Rihanna also recently recorded a song called "Winning Women" with Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger for P&G’s female deodorant Secret.

Rihanna made her acting debut in a cameo role in Bring It On: All or Nothing, which was released on August 8, 2006, she also appeared on an episode of American soap opera All My Children and dramaLas Vegas.

Good Girl Gone Bad

Rihanna went in the studio in the early 2007 with Ne-Yo, Stargate, Timbaland among others to record her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The album was released on June 5, 2007. It features Jay-Z and Ne-Yo as featured artists. The first single, "Umbrella", featuring Jay-Z, was released on March 29, 2007 reaching number one in various countries, including the U.S. It was produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The Dream" Nash. Her second single, "Shut Up and Drive", was sent to radio stations on June 5, has so far peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rihanna also stated that the album has a different feel from her previous two, with more up-tempo and mid-tempo melodies.

Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab". In interviews, many have questioned the meaning and reasoning of the album title. During an interview on UK radio station Capital FM, Rihanna explains: "Bad is not sleazy. Bad has its own term to every individual and in my case it just means I’ve gotten a little rebellious on the album, broken out of my shell and I'm taking risks... Michael Jackson 'bad' kind of way." The album title reflects the difference between the old and new Rihanna. "Bad means cool, bad means funky, bad means having an attitude, bad means being edgy. This album is definitely a great representation of who I am now, and where I am in my career," she says.

Rihanna was recently named 2007 Venus Breeze 'Celebrity Legs of a Goddess' by Gillette, and she insured her legs for $1,000,000. Rihanna is also set to be going on tour with Chris Brown and Bow Wow.

On July 7, 2007, Rihanna performed at the Japanese leg of Live Earth in Tokyo.

Starting December 6, 2007 Rihanna will tour the UK in support of the album with ten shows, it is called the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour. On Monday of last week, Chris Brown confirmed that Rihanna is going to be on his album.
